HISTORY OF THE GREATER MOUNT CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH

NEW STRUCTURE

The Mount Calvary Baptist Church was founded about 100 years ago. Under the direction of Rev. W. R. Martin, a drive for the funds to build a new edifice came to pass.

Rev. Martin predicted great possibilities in the future for the church. His predictions were realized in the new structure in 1963.

HARVEY GANTT

Valued at an estimate of $80,000-$90,000, the building is said to have been the first major undertaking of Harvey Gantt, the first Negro student at Clemson University.

Mr. Gantt was the architect for the project, and Otis Davis (who had previously built a number of churches in the Piedmont area), was the contractor.

This new edifice was to seat 300 in the main auditorium. The basement contained an assembly hall, seven classrooms, a pastor’s study, superintendent’s office and a kitchen.

The church office was located upstairs off the choir room. Rev. B. B. DuBose was pastor at Mount Calvary for three years when the new edifice facing Anzel Street was dedicated on May 22, 1966.

Later in the year, the old church facing Calvary Street was torn down.

ACQUIRING OF PRESENT FACILITY

Mount Calvary Baptist Church officially became Greater Mount Calvary Baptist Church during its 2006 Annual Church Conference. Upon seeking to become a legal incorporated body, it was discovered that a church in Greenville had already been licensed to operate the name of Mount Calvary. To this end Deacon Horace Butler, Sr. made a motion for the name change. Mount Calvary Baptist Church became Greater Mount Calvary Baptist church through Incorporation by the State of South Carolina on February 27, 2006.

The Congregation moved solely upon faith in God from the Ansel Street location on December 25, 2005 into the facility owned by the West End Community Baptist Church (formerly Judson Baptist). Title to this site was received on May 26, 2006. Adjacent property to the parking facility was purchased on June 29, 2006. The properties were purchased without the congregation incurring any debt for which God is given all praise.

The Greater Mount Calvary Baptist Church describes itself on the place where sinners come and are converted to believers for the edifying of the Body of Christ.

We seek to do this through service in the teaching and practicing of Christian doctrine, home and abroad.

Rev. Windell Rodgers has been the Pastor of Greater Mount Calvary Baptist Church for 25 years.
